I disagree that the music is to tie up the tones of each scene about his emotional and psychological state, I would say it is to make an awesome action sequence. I think, even if using the same song twice was a problem, paying another band to rerecord a somewhat similar song, while changing that song to make it even more similar to the song you already paid for, is just making more problems. It is insane to hear what all they'll do for money Kiss could absolutely re-do the lyrics, as well as I already said the speed of the song. If John Williams had composed a new theme for every single scene, instead of reusing songs to thematically tie scenes, character, and films together, the Star Wars saga would be objectively worse, despite there being more musical variety.Īlso, God Of Thunder would be a terrible action theme.

The Star Wars metaphor is an extreme one, yes, but it's the same principle. Changing the song loses that thematic connection between the two scenes. Then we hear Immigrant Song over a fight scene where Thor doesn't have Mjolnir, signifying that he's back to the same level he was at during the opening fight scene.

Shortly afterwards, Mjolnir is destroyed, and the rest of the movie has Thor moping about how he lost his hammer.Īfter he loses an eye and talks to Odin, Thor discovers that his power doesn't come from Mjolnir, and that he's just as powerful without it. At the start of the film, we hear Immigrant Song play over a fight scene where Thor is using Mjolnir. During Ragnarok, Thor is doubting his abilities, because he doesn't have Mjolnir. It's reused to thematically tie together the two scenes where it plays. Immigrant Song isn't reused because they're lazy. Sorry to nitpick (not unlike Nando's podcast Mostly Nitpicking) your genuine thoughts on the movie. When the song starts again you know Thor is back in form again and he's about to kick some ass. So I would argue it's not lazy at all, but doing a callback and giving the audience that payoff. But when Thor "Gets His Groove Back" at the end of the movie, this song comes rolling back in to give you the same connection from the beginning. Then you assume it's not going to happen again. We as the audience heard the song play in the beginning and thought "how cool is this! It's taking away the more serious tone of the last two THOR movies and shows that it's going to be a little more fun." It plays along to Thor being a badass and kicking butt. The reason playing Immigrant Song twice works is due to Immigrant Song being a "Payoff" at the end.

Having a rock song in the beginning of the movie then a completely different song 2 hours later wouldn't have the same connection and would feel out of place.

If you want to start playing music, you would need to go full James Gunn and showcase it throughout the film and make it part of the soundtrack. Having two different Rock songs in the movie would be more random than having the same song twice. The Immigrant Song, while also talks about war and battle, is still vague enough and simple enough not to contain too much dark images. Secondly the lyrics depict a darker character being "raised by demons", saying he will "rob you of your virgin soul", and also "gather darkness to please me And I command you to kneel". For one thing, it's about Greek mythology, not Norse mythology. The lyrics to God of Thunder don't fit with Thor.
